Quenching of excited 1P1 state atomic zinc by molecular nitrogen: A matrix-isolation spectroscopy/quantum chemical calculation study

The optical absorption of zinc atoms isolated in solid nitrogen was identified by a concentration study. The mechanism of energy transfer was identified in quantum mechanical calculations due to low energy crossing of the bound excited singlet state and repulsive ground singlet state. One-dimensional Landau-Zener (LZ) theory was used to analyze the efficiency of energy crossing between repulsive ground state and strongly attractive bound state. The study revealed that excited single state quenching of atomic zinc by molecular nitrogen occured for side-on approach between the two species.
