Conducting sex work research in a politically contentious climate: Lessons from Ireland
Optional Fields
© 2017 selection and editorial matter, Andrew King, Ana Cristina Santos and Isabel Crowhurst; individual chapters, the contributors. This chapter explores the challenges faced by four leading researchers of commercial sex, working in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. At a time when both the Irish Parliament in Dublin and the devolved Northern Ireland assembly in Belfast are due to debate the merits of criminalizing the purchase of sex, the chapter explores how these researchers have navigated a political climate that has increasingly placed the spotlight on their personal and professional allegiances as much as the merits of the research conducted. The chapter focuses specifically on conflicts which have emerged within previous feminist allies, the political scrutiny of researchers hired by Universities to conduct sex work research and the personal consequences when data produced is subjected to criticism and debate.
