Informal game making occurs in a range of settings, including game jams and game workshops. In this paper we ask who attends informal game making events, and how are they connected to the persistent lack of diversity in formal game design programmes and in the games industry (Jenson and De Castell, 2018). We present findings from surveys of three game jams and our experience of running six introductory game making workshops. We conclude by identifying some of the ways in which informal game making events construct code/spaces that contribute to persistent structural inequalities in access to game making education and work, and in the normalisation of problematic pedagogic and working practices.
