This chapter brings a new perspective to Dukas research by refocusing the study of his critical writings, specifically his publications from the 1890s and early 1900s. Instead of using those texts to magnify our understanding of his compositional projects, my aim here is to zoom out from portrait mode to capture Dukas’s place in the wider landscape of French criticism, musicology, and other intellectual movements. In doing so, I trace how his texts became part of the critical, historical canon for early twentieth-century French musicians and readers.
