In line with international policy, recent decades have seen substantial policy developments in Ireland to support the inclusion of students with additional needs in mainstream school settings. These papers are based on research on inclusion in Irish education and acknowledge the need for system-wide engagement and responsibility. They examine the post-school trajectories and plans of young adults with additional needs who are completing their education in mainstream schools. They look at the education and development provision, at ITE and CPD levels, for teachers who have students with additional needs, and highlight their support and resource requirements. Finally, in an environment that prioritises inclusion in mainstream schools, the place of the special school in Ireland is examined.
